Update from the President
We’re moving forward with our Argentina Chapter Project. The project
community is El Toro, located in Argentina’s Jujuy Province. Jujuy is
in the extreme north of Argentina and borders Chile and Bolivia. We
have been in contact with an in-country NGO CAESA, who helped us to
identify this particular community and provided some project
recommendations to consider as we prepare for an initial assessment
trip. At this point, potential projects include a greenhouse to help
El Toro grow more crops and protect them from harsh weather
conditions; improvements to the village’s potable water and sanitation
systems; and possible small scale solar electricity generators to
supply the village school. We are hoping to travel on the assessment
trip fall of this year; once we have made the trip we should be
identify our initial project and set out a more concrete project and
travel schedule. Right now the project team is gathering information
in preparation for the assessment trip. The Chapter recently held a
Spanish Language and Culture Workshop as part of our preparations.
In addition to our own chapter project, the Chesapeake Professional
Chapter is very active in supporting the many local college chapters
of EWB-USA. Established chapters in the area include UMD College Park
and JHU; we have many members who have and are acting as Professional
Advisors on their projects, including traveling with them on project
trips. Also, newer area student chapters are coming online, including
UMD BC, George Mason, and Montgomery College. We are meeting with
members of these chapters and providing them with support as
requested. The George Mason chapter will be collaborating closely
with UMCP as they get off the ground. We often hold our monthly meeting
at out student chapters. Look for these meetings on our calendar.
