The next Chesapeake Professional Partners EWB Meeting will be at 7 PM on Monday, January 14 at University of MD, College Park, MD. Click here for directions.

We are delighted to host Guest Speaker Saul Garlick, Director of the Student Movement for Real Change. SMRC (www.StudentMovementUSA.org) is a non-profit that empowers young people to improve health and education in neglected regions of the world with projects currently in South Africa and Kenya.

Saul will tell us about their project in Kenya, a 28km water pipeline and sanitation project expected to impact 36,000 people living in the entire location of Kayafungo, 50 kilometers north west of Mombasa. The project is slated to break ground late summer and already has the support of the national and local governements and local community through a women’s community based organization. The SMRC is also collaborating with a team of students from EWB at Washington State University. However, additional engineering support is likely needed!

Also on the agenda: the first phase of the Liberia project is about to begin! Our three-member team travels to Liberia this month and will visit two counties to assess potential projects. When our members return we will review their findings and begin our design. The implementation phase will follow in either the Summer or Fall of this year. The assessment team will present their findings at our February meeting.
